Crane Eater family devotional

It is our prayer that God will use this guide as a tool to help you as parents to train and disciple your children. We encourage you to take time in the evening (or morning) during the week to have an intentional time of family Bible study, worship, and Scripture memory. You could do this every night or a couple of nights each week. Make it a habit, and don't let the to-dos and pressures of our busy lives rob you of this precious time together.

While it's true that the church has a God-given responsibility to teach God's Word and lead in worship, God gives the primary responsibility for a child's spiritual development to his or her parents. Below are just a few of the scriptures that admonish parents to be actively involved in training their children and teaching them the things of the Lord:

Deuteronomy 4:9-10

“Only be on your guard and diligently watch yourselves, so that you don’t forget the things your eyes have seen and so that they don’t slip from your mind[a] as long as you live. Teach them to your children and your grandchildren. 10 The day you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, the Lord said to me, ‘Assemble the people before me, and I will let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me all the days they live on the earth and may instruct their children.’

DEUTERONOMY 6:4-9

4 “Listen, Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6 These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. 7 Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be a symbol on your forehead.[c] 9 Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your city gates.

Proverbs 22:6

 Start a youth out on his way;
even when he grows old he will not depart from it.

Ephesians 6:4

4 Fathers, don’t stir up anger in your children, but bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

Unit Review

Lesson Summary

This week is a review week. We have looked at the kings of Israel and Judah—the good, the bad, and the ugly. We saw how God sent prophet after prophet to call the people to repent of their idolatry and sin, but they would not.

So, God brought Assyria in 722 BC to take the northern kingdom of Israel captive, and then about 120 years later, he brought Babylon to send the southern kingdom of Judah into exile.

The prophet Jeremiah lived from about 630 to

Daniel Serves Faithfully

Lesson Summary

Although he was a captive in a foreign land, Daniel continued to serve the Lord by faithfully serving whichever king was in power. The book of Daniel reveals that he ministered to Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar,

Darius the Mede, and Cyrus. He likely also served under Evil-merodach, who ruled in the time between Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar, though the only mention of him in the Bible is in reference to the release of Jehoiachin (Jeremiah 5

God Defends His Glory

Lesson Summary

The Apostle Paul told his young disciple Timothy that “all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Timothy 3:12). As we saw this week in our lesson, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah are living examples of that verse. God’s people have always been persecuted for their faith in God and for obeying his commands.

We see the apostles in the book of Acts responding in a way similar to Daniel and his friends.

God Blesses Daniel

Lesson Summary

This week we saw how Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah refused to eat the king’s food, but instead obeyed the laws of God. As a result of the young men’s obedience and faithfulness, “God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams” (Daniel 1:17).

Daniel 2 records the king’s dream of a great statue of gold, silver, bronze, iron, and clay. Daniel 7 records a vision given

God Judges Judah

Lesson Summary

Just as God used Assyria to deliver judgment to his people in Israel about 125 years earlier, he sent Babylon to deliver judgment to Judah. Babylon’s king at this time was Nebuchadnezzar. This wicked king— called “my servant” in the book of Jeremiah—was the one God chose to bring his judgment to Judah (Jeremiah 25:9, 27:6, 43:10).

God is in control of the hearts of kings, and he turns them wherever he wants (Proverbs 21:1). And so, God used Neb

God Warns Judah

Lesson Summary

Jeremiah is known as the weeping prophet. God told him to speak of the coming judgment against Judah from the north—from Babylon. God told Jeremiah that the people would not listen to him, but would fight against him. However, God also told Jeremiah that he would be with him to deliver him (Jeremiah 1:17–19).

A unique way that God used Jeremiah and other prophets was to have them present an object lesson to the people—a physical picture of the m

Josiah Follows God

Lesson Summary

Josiah was one of the few good kings that ruled in Judah during the time of the divided kingdom. Josiah set about repairing the temple and as they were cleaning, they found the Book of the Law. The king had

it read, and when he heard the words of the Lord, he tore his clothes, sought the Lord, and led his people in repentance. The land was purged of idolatry and the high places were torn down.

Josiah became king when he was only eight years ol

God Promises the Messiah

Lesson Summary

This week we looked at Messianic prophecies found in the books of Micah and Isaiah. Of course, both prophets deal with more than the coming of Messiah. We can learn much about the history of Israel and the attributes of God by reading these books.

We want to look at just one chapter of Isaiah this week, one that speaks of the Messiah’s coming, his reign, and God’s majesty and authority over the earth—Isaiah 40. This tremendous chapter i

Lesson Summary

This week we learned about the youngest king of Judah. Joash became king when he was only seven years old. His childhood was dramatic, as we saw in the lesson, but God protected him and the line of David. In 2 Kings 12:2, we read that Joash was a good king an

Lesson Summary

In this unit, we saw how God sent prophet after prophet to call his people to repent of their idolatry and sin, but they would not.

Although he is a God of mercy, God is also just and he must punish sin. So, God brought Assyria in 721 BC to take the northern kingdom of Israel captive.

But God's judgment was coming on Assyria, as well, because of their wickedness and sinfulness. You might shout, "But wait a minute! How can God judge Assyria for carryi

God Judges Israel

Lesson Summary

God had been patient with Israel for 250 years, and he sent many prophets to warn his people of their idolatry. But after years of consistent rebellion, idolatry, sin, and hostility toward God, his anger was finally provoked to action, and he judged Israel by removing them from his sight. The Lord at last rejected Israel, afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of plunderers (2 Kings 17:20).

Lesson Summary

Israel surely deserved God's wrath for their constant violations of his commands. God would have been just in totally wiping out the nation for its sins, but he had made promises to Abraham and David to bring the Messiah from the nation of Israel. His mercy was shown

in withholding punishment-he didn't give them what they deserved. In fact, his love was demonstrated as he restored them in spite of their sin and their rejection of his authority.

God Sends Jonah

Lesson Summary

Jonah was commanded by God to go to the pagan nation of Assyria to its capital, Nineveh. The Israelites hated the Assyrians. They were a cruel nation that worshipped false gods.

Jonah was, no doubt, opposed to sharing the truth with the pagan Gentiles of Nineveh and showed displeasure when God spared them (Jonah 4:1-2). Similarly, at times we may feel that certain people don't deserve to hear the message of the gospel-the message of repentance

God Warns Israel

Lesson Summary

The northern kingdom of Israel was ruled by a series of evil kings who "did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and followed the sins of Jeroboam"-the first king of Israel. None of the 19 kings of Israel sought after God, but they continued in idolatry, murder, and rebellion. God sent prophets to warn them of coming judgment if they did not repent. The kings, however, ignored the calls of the prophets and continued in their disobedience.
